FED:Hendra claims three more NSW horses
SYDNEY, Aug 18 AAP - Three more horses have died from the Hendra virus on the NSW north
coast, bringing the total number of deaths in the state to nine.
Two horses have died on a South Ballina property and one horse has died on a Mullumbimby
property, NSW Chief Veterinary Officer Ian Roth said on Thursday.
The precise time of the deaths is not known at this stage.
It follows the death of another horse at a different property near Ballina on Monday,
where two other horses were also deemed to be at risk and continue to be monitored.
Dr Roth said seven properties in NSW had now been affected by Hendra virus.
"It's critical horse owners maintain vigilance against this virus," he said in a statement.
The most recent deaths bring to 19 the number of horses infected with Hendra that have
died or been put down since June 20 this year - 10 in Queensland and nine in NSW.
The virus is spread from flying foxes to horses and, rarely, from horses to people.
In one case in Queensland it was transmitted from horses to a dog.
The Department of Primary Industries have quarantined both properties following the
latest cases in NSW.
"Four remaining horses on the South Ballina property and one horse at the Mullumbimby
property are currently showing no signs of illness and will be monitored twice daily,
Dr Roth said on Thursday.
"People should keep horses away from fruiting and flowering trees that might attract
fruit bats or other areas where bats are known to congregate."

NSW:Teen missing after woman found dead
SYDNEY, April 21 AAP - A teenager is missing after a woman was found dead on the NSW
far north coast.
The body of the 48-year-old woman was discovered by a friend inside a home in Suffolk
Park on Wednesday morning.
She had suffered multiple injuries and police are treating her death as suspicious.
They now hold fears for the safety of 17-year-old David Carter, who was living at the
home and hasn't been seen since the woman's body was found.
He suffers from a medical condition and may not have taken his medication in recent
days, police said.
A Holden Commodore police believe David was travelling in was discovered in the Port
Macquarie area on Wednesday evening.
The teenager is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 175-180cm tall with
an obese build, blue eyes and brown hair.
It's not known what he was wearing at the time of his disappearance.
Anyone who sees David or knows his whereabouts is asked not to approach him but to
contact police immediately via triple zero.
A post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of the woman's death.

RU:Nothing wrong with Victor: Wallabies
By David Beniuk
CAPE TOWN, Aug 23 AAP - Springboks coach Peter de Villiers may think there is "something
wrong" with Victor Matfield, but the Wallabies have no doubt the champion lock will be
primed for his 100th Test on his home ground.
De Villiers on Monday conceded he needed to speak with Matfield regarding his form
as the South Africans search for a first victory in this year's Tri-Nations series at
Loftus Versfeld on Saturday (0100 Sunday AEST).
The admission came as South African commentators also questioned the future of Springboks
captain John Smit, who took responsibility for the weekend loss to New Zealand in his
100th Test.
"There's definitely something wrong with Victor. I have to speak to him," de Villiers
told South African website keo.co.za.
That's not a view shared by Australian opposite Dean Mumm, who expects lineout guru
Matfield to produce his best in Pretoria.
"Absolutely, you can't say too much more, it's been an unbelievable career and it's
certainly not finished," Mumm told a press conference on Monday.
"He's picked up most of, if not all, the prizes and treasures you can get along the
way and he's done that with distinction and form all the way throughout.
"His form of late has been very, very good and so we don't expect anything less.
"It's nice for him to be able to play his 100th Test on his home ground and I'm sure
the people up there at Loftus love Victor."
De Villiers, whose side will play under referee Alain Rolland for the first time since
an outburst from the coach resulted in a disciplinary hearing, said he was wary of Australia,
who haven't won on the South African high veldt since 1963.
"They bring a different mindset to the game than the All Blacks. They don't have the
same physical presence," he said.
"Quade Cooper will pose a threat with his creativity and energy, and we'll have to
counter David Pocock on the ground. We have a plan for him up our sleeves."
South Africa have been bolstered by the availability of long-range kick specialist
Francois Steyn, who has arrived after a wrangle with his French club, and centre Jaque
Fourie.
Flanker Juan Smith is confident of being fit after suffering an abdominal strain in
the weekend's 29-22 loss to New Zealand.

Swm: More to life than gold medals
By Doug Conway, Senior Correspondent
BEIJING, Aug 14 AAP - One of the greatest inspirations at Beijing's Olympic pool today
didn't even get wet.
Eric Shanteau has more important things on his mind than medals, namely beating testicular
cancer.
The whole world had wished him into the 200m breaststroke final, but he missed out
by 13 one-hundredths of a second.
He was second substitute.
He had to watch on as Japan's Kosuke Kitajima took the gold medal ahead of Australian
Brenton Rickard.
On a rare day when Michael Phelps was not up for any gold medals, this was the perfect
time to contemplate swimmers other than winners.
Shanteau was diagnosed with cancer just days after being selected on the American team.
The 24-year-old from Atlanta, Georgia opted to delay his treatment in order to live
his Olympic dream.
That dream didn't turn out quite the way he hoped.
Everyone hopes his treatment does.
Shanteau is a reminder that sport, even elite sport, is just a part of life.
"There's a lot more to life than the Olympic Games," he said.
"Learning that lesson quickly keeps the whole event in perspective for me."
Shanteau, whose own hero is Lance Armstrong, the Tour de France cycling legend who
overcame the same disease, is something of a hero himself in the US team.
Phelps, who lost his grandmother to cancer, said: "It's not an easy battle. He's positive
and he's excited to be here, and he seems like just a normal guy."
US team captain Brendan Hansen said: "He gives you a sense of the bigger picture. The
Olympics look a lot smaller when you're dealing with something like cancer."
Champion backstroker Aaron Peirsol said: "The way he's handled this has put all this
into perspective for all of us. We've taken a step back and realised there is more to
it than just swimming."
The public sees Shanteau's positive side, but he talked candidly this week about the
other side, saying he was "only human" and was on a "roller coaster ride".
"This isn't the `flu, it's cancer," he said.
"It is on my mind constantly, I can't help that."
Shanteau has been quite a story in Beijing, especially considering the attention heaped
on his teammate Phelps, the most successful Olympian of all time.
But when all the shouting has died down, and everyone has gone home to get on with
their own lives, he begins his next battle alone.

Fed: Remains of two diggers believed found in Vietnam
By Jane Bunce
CANBERRA, April 20 AAP - A group of Australian Vietnam veterans are 99 per cent certain
remains they have uncovered in southern Vietnam belong to two diggers missing in action
for more than 40 years.
Lance Corporal Richard Parker and Private Peter Gillson were killed during battle in
the Dong Nai province east of Saigon in 1965, but their bodies were never recovered.
The group of veterans, known as Operation Aussies Home, have been searching in Vietnam
for the two soldiers and another four still missing in other parts of the country.
Group leader Retired Infantry Lieutenant Colonel Jim Bourke and Veterans Affairs Minister
Bruce Billson are both optimistic the remains will be identified as the missing pair.
Lt Col Bourke said the group had researched their likely resting place then used ground-penetrating
radar to eliminate much of the half-acre cassava field they were examining.
On Monday the group discovered the sole of a boot and began excavating the surrounding area.
"(On Wednesday) we had a major breakthrough," Mr Bourke told ABC Radio.
"The guys recovered a map that was the same map as we used on that operation in 1965.
"It was quite a moving scene, actually.
"The men were working in extreme temperatures, and as they were excavating they were
talking to their friends, and telling them they were going home."
Lt Col Bourke said he had called the men's families to break the news.
"I didn't want to do it until I was 99.5 per cent certain that we had the remains of
the two men, and I've got that degree of certainty now, based on the recovery of the map,"
he said.
"Obviously identification of the remains will be subject to a formal forensic process.
But as I say I'm 99 per cent certain that we're on the money."
Mr Billson said if the remains did prove to be Australian they would be treated with dignity.
"We've got some optimism but we need to be careful that there's firm (proof of their
identity)," he told Southern Cross Broadcasting.
"I've got some optimism, if they are who we think they may be, we'll arrange for their
repatriation back to Australia and proper burial in consultation with their families."
Forensic specialists were preparing to leave for Vietnam within days to help in the
identification process, Mr Billson said.
The excavation also has uncovered bone fragments, teeth and a button used on Australian
Army clothing of the 1960s.

NSW: Investigation into shooting jeopardised, parliament told
SYDNEY, April 5 AAP - The NSW opposition has used parliament to accuse the government
of jeopardising an investigation into a double murder in western Sydney.
Bassam Chami, 26, and his friend Ibrahim Assad, 27, died after being shot in Granville last week.
Parliament was today told that on Monday night, after shots were fired at a home on
the same street as the Granville murders, several carloads of middle-eastern "thugs" were
spotted outside Sydney's Silverwater jail.
Opposition justice spokesman Andrew Humpherson said that "four carloads of middle-eastern
thugs were spotted outside Silverwater jail communicating in Arabic with inmates, including
members of the Chami family".
He asked Premier Morris Iemma why the government had previously transferred the only
Silverwater perimeter guard capable of translating the comments - a move he claimed had
jeopardised intelligence gathering in the murder inquiry.
In response, Mr Iemma accused the opposition of undermining the work of police and
other authorities.
"You think so little of those that risk their lives in doing dangerous jobs that they
would participate in some sort of hidden agenda," he told parliament.

NSW: Iemma won't cut services to plug budget hole

SYDNEY, Aug 4 AAP - NSW Premier and Treasurer Morris Iemma has promised not to cut
frontline services to help plug the state's looming budget deficit.
Mr Iemma, who yesterday gave Finance Minister Michael Costa the job of identifying

Mr Costa, who has reportedly said it would make no difference if 20 per cent of the
state's public servants were sacked, has also ruled out forced redundancies.
Mr Iemma said it was not clear how large a deficit the state was facing following his
decision to abolish the vendor duty on the sale of investment properties.
But he said he was determined to rein in expenditure without cutting back frontline services.
"We're about quarantining frontline services," he told reporters.
The 2.25 per cent vendor tax had been expected to bring in $358 million in revenue
for the government this year.
Economic modelling commissioned by property industry groups earlier this year found
abolishing vendor duty could deliver the government up to $200 million in extra revenue,
because the stimulus to the housing industry would increase stamp duty receipts.
Mr Iemma said the size of the deficit would become clear later in the year and the
government was determined to put the budget back into the black.
"It's something that we have to see as we move through the year because there are varying
estimates of just what additional revenues and activity are generated by the removal of
vendor duty," he said.
"The challenge is to ensure that it (the deficit) doesn't become locked in and that's
behind a determined effort to find savings ... and discipline on expenditure."
Opposition treasury spokeswoman Peta Seaton said Mr Iemma's policy of no forced redundancies
was not sustainable.
"NSW's triple-A rating is now threatened because Morris Iemma today ruled out making
the essential cuts to waste necessary to get us out of the red and back into the black,"
she told reporters.
"This will see NSW forced to wind back essential spending on services like health,
education and police and rail and could trigger the very real risk that taxes will be
increased by the Iemma government to fill this budget black hole."

UsainAAEs not using up all his energy - yet.
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
LIGHTNING Jamaican Usain Bolt is still yet to break sweat as he strolls towards double sprint gold. The laid-back sprinter, who smashed the 100m world record having walked over the line on Saturday was just as much at ease in his preferred 200m yesterday. And as in the 100m Bolt looked in a different class to everyone else - even the defending champion Shawn Crawford. In yesterday's second round he repeated what he had done in the first qualifying without even trying. The fastest man on the planet came off the bend well in front and eased off with fully 50 metres to go, crossing the line in what some would say was nothing more than a canter, others a brisk walk.He crossed the line in 20.29 seconds, with American Crawford (20.42secs) in second and veteran Kim Collins of St Kitts and St Nevis stealing third from veteran Briton Marlon Devonish.
The 21-year-old Bolt, who has run the three fastest 200m times this year including the fifth fastest ever - 19.67secs in Athens, is bidding for a first Olympic sprint double since American Carl Lewis achieved the feat at the Los Angeles Games in 1984.He said: C[pounds sterling]ICOm just looking to go out and show the world how hard ICOm working.C[pounds sterling]ICOm satisfied that I was leading all the way and ICOm qualified for the semi-final.C[yen]Many sprinters tend to be pent up and hyperactive, but to prove that he is as calm and collected as they come, Bolt revealed that he had done little else but sleep since his 100m victory.C[pounds sterling]After the 100m, I had little time for celebration. All I have done is a big sleep and some relaxation. I just take it on my own.C[yen]
Other runners through to the semis include ZimbabweCOs Brian Dzingai, who followed up his first-round victory with an impressive 20.23secs win ahead of 100m bronze medallist Walter Dix.The American hit the final stretch neck-and-neck with Dzingai but faded before rebounding in the last 10 metres to finish second in 20.27secs.C[pounds sterling]I came off the bend and controlled the straight,C[yen] said Dix. C[pounds sterling]That is exactly what I wanted to do, I didnCOt want to give too much away. I wanted to save as much energy as possible for the semi-finals.C[yen]But compared to Bolt Dix looked like he was straining every muscle in his body to even stay within three metres of the Jamaican.Elsewhere, one runner who could be in the shakedown for the medals is Churandy Martina of the Dutch Antilles, who finished fourth in SaturdayCOs 100m and qualified in the 200m with 20.42secs.
Defending champion Crawford had earlier said that he felt under no pressure to follow up on his gold medal-winning exploits at the Athens Games four years ago.C[pounds sterling]I donCOt have to defend anything, the 2004 medal is mine and nobody can take it,C[yen] he said, adding that C[pounds sterling]everyone is beatableCO.C[pounds sterling]I am here to shoot for the 2008 medal, we are all doing the same - trying to shoot for that gold," Crawford said. C[pounds sterling]ICOm ready to fight. If I wasnCOt ready to fight I wouldnCOt be here. C[pounds sterling]The legs feel good, I am ready to go.C[yen]Meanwhile, the UAECOs speed king Omar Juma al Salfa finished seventh in his 200m first-round heat. The 19-year-old may not have made the second round but he ran a seasonCOs best 21.00secs to suggest thereCOs more to come from him in the future.
