Fed: Abortion-derived stem cells could be used for research

SYDNEY, Aug 5 AAP - Tissue from aborted human foetuses may be used as a source of embryonicstem cells in Australia, the country's leading stem-cell researcher has said.

Monash University scientist Alan Trounson told The Sydney Morning Herald scientistshad always been allowed to use tissue from aborted foetuses for research and transplantationand there was nothing to stop stem cells being used.

"Here in Australia we would be allowed to use it," he said. "There would be no impedimentto that."

Professor Trounson was speaking after a research team in Singapore demonstrated forthe first time the growth of human embryonic stem cells on human tissue cultures, thepaper said.
