Fed: Ridding Aust from terrorism far from over - Hill
Defence Minister ROBERT HILL says the task of ridding Australia of the threat of terrorismis far from over.
Senator HILL has used his dawn address on board HMAS Kanimbla in the Persian Gulf tojustify Australia's involvement in the US-led war on Iraq.
About 2,000 Australian troops were sent to the Gulf for the war on Iraq, and abouthalf are due to return home in coming weeks.
The defence minister and defence force chief General PETER COSGROVE have travelledto Iraq to thank the Australian troops for their role in defeating SADDAM HUSSEIN'S regime.
Senator HILL says the task of ridding Australians of the threat of terrorism is farfrom over, despite successes in Afghanistan and Iraq.
He says the terrorist attacks of recent years are reminders that diplomacy, containmentand deterrence don't always work.
Senator HILL says sometimes there's no alternative but to combat a threat with military force.
