Vic: Five die on Victorian roads

MELBOURNE, Dec 12 AAP - Two major accidents on Victorian roads overnight have claimedthe lives of five people.

Police said three people died in a collision between a car and a truck on the PrincesHighway south-west of Melbourne early today.

The accident occurred near the highway's intersection with Broderick Road in Corioat about 8.15am (AEDT), police said.

An ambulance spokesman said two people died instantly while another died a short timelater at the scene.

The coroner will investigate the triple fatality.

The car and truck were travelling in opposite directions but it was not yet clear whetherthe accident was head-on, police said.

The highway remained partially closed, with only one Melbourne-bound lane in operation.

The driver of the truck was not believed to have suffered any serious injuries andthere were no other occupants of the car.

And two men died when the car in which they were passengers ran off the road and rolleddown an embankment north-east of Melbourne overnight.

Police said the sedan carrying four people left the Mansfield-Woods Point Road, atJamieson, about 10.50pm (AEDT).

The car then crashed through trees as it rolled down an embankment, police said.

Two male passengers died at the scene, while the male driver and another male passengerwere taken to nearby hospitals in a serious but stable condition.

The names of the two men, both aged in their 20s, have not been released.

The Victorian road toll now stands at 369, 50 fewer than at the same time last year.
