Vic: Senior federal Labor MP to resign

The federal Labor party faces a speedy pre-selection contest in Victoria with senior
MP NEIL O'KEEFE expected to confirm his retirement today.

The 54-year-old former front bencher is not expected to contest his central Victorian
seat of Burke at the coming election, due within the next few months.

Electrical Trade Union secretary, DEAN MIGHELL, has denied reports he plans to contest
Burke, saying he is committed to the union.

Labor sources have also tipped BRENDAN O'CONNOR, assistant national secretary of the
Australian Services Union, as a possible candidate.

Mr O'KEEFE has held the Kyneton-based seat since 1984 and has a current margin of seven per cent.
